We are thinking about moving the Food/ Ag meetings to Saturday afternoons or evenings, after the Galesburg Farmers’ Market is over and folks who are there have time to go home and unpack the bit they didn’t sell (or in my case, what they bought from other vendors :). Locations can rotate so that our many valued and location-varied members can conserve some petrol.
Areas of concern will be 1) establishing a mentoring program whereby new and aspiring farmers will meet and work with existing sustainable farmers; 2) establishing local town-based growing centers (backyard gardens, community and/ or neighborhood gardens, along with seed sharing and seed saving); and 3) whatever else we (you) come up with.

All people involved in the food supply (growers, those who limit their food intake, activists, eaters) need to read this book — at least if we wish to get to the heart of the matter and set up sustainable food systems. In fact, I think everyone could benefit from this book!
I will get a copy for The Center when it is finally published.

Food & Community Garden get together on November 10th at 6:30 pm at The Center. Community members have been invited, and much planning is needed to get this project off the ground in time for spring planting!
We need land/ garden space, we need seeds (Seed Savers has some to donate but we need to act SOON!), and most of all, we need enthusiastic participants, beginners and experienced seed-saver gardeners, alike.
Next planning meeting is Monday, November 3, at 6:30 p.m.

Second get-together on planning community gardens is Monday, November 24th, at 6:30 p.m., at The Center. Please come and share you wisdoms — or your interest in learning from others! –diana

This summer we are going to put up at least 1/2 acre maybe 2 into vegatables. We will offer our land for free if anyone is interested in planting their own. Water is limited but availbale. Sawdust is available for mulching, soil tests will be in few weeks, and we are certainly going to add some nitrogen to offset mulching with sawdust. Plowing and tilling will be done by us. We are 13 miles due west of Hy-Vee on Main St. Send me an email if you are interested.

Saw a nice (but too short) editorial about gardening in yesterday’s NYT.

Perhaps what the world is going through now will encourage us all to do mroe home gardening.

Rick,
You’re offer is great. What a wonderful offer you are making. I assure you, I will come out to see what’s going on at Dell Trillium, even if I am not going to take advantage of your offer. (If I garden, it’ll be within 2 blocks of where I live.)

A friend of mine, Brian Tibbets, is helping out. I think we have four vegatable planned. I am also burying and insulating a 20′ shipping container for the storage of produce.

re: Galesburg Neighborhood Gardens planned.
I’m 2 blocks from E. Main and Farnham. Where is the closest planned garden? My previous residence was in Austin, so mid February was a fine time to start gardening. And now is when the first purple martins were arrived.
Where can I easily learn timing for planting indoors for seedlings. There’s nothing like digging into soil to make oneself feel good. (As a child, I dug with neighborhood kids behind our garage to reach China. We reached may 2 feet closer.)
